i also have severe anxiety as well as a mood disorder that i take medication for. any time something really big and scary happens (like what’s happening in Ferguson) it does put my anxiety into overdrive and it does have a very severe affect on my mood. this past week I’ve been noticeably moodier, sadder and much more anxious.
but please listen to me: it is actually not okay to ignore what is happening.
this is not a call for you to give up on all your self-care or expose yourself excessively. what i am saying is this: there are some situations where, as white people, we must stick our necks out to spread awareness and help those we have privilege over, those that we are the oppressors of. we must be willing to spread the truth, to elevate the voices of those being oppressed.
it’s difficult. it’s very, very difficult. but as white people who care about racism, who care about being anti-racism activists, who are invested in actually being any type of ally you have an obligation to not ignore this. to pay attention. to spread the truth. to be engaged. to recognize the privilege that you have despite how much it may hurt to be more engaged.
yes, i understand that engaging with this may be uncomfortable, may raise your anxiety to unbearable levels, may even cause a panic attack. i understand. but you also have to think about those who have anxiety disorders, panic attack disorders, mood disorders in Ferguson. they need our solidarity right now. they need us to support them and believe in them.
support Ferguson. raise awareness. spread the truth. donate if you can. please do not ignore this.
